With two weeks until the big day, I'm thrilled to annouce that our Christmas letter is now online.
Some of you will also be receiving cards in the mail. Some will get the Hawaii picture, and some will get the picture from Dyan's wedding. We ordered equal quantities of both, so it's a 50-50 shot. Good luck!

Brrrrr....
Snowfall #2 hit us today. We're managing just fine, but it's always tough to get used to the cold.
As for our Christmas preparations, things are going great. The tree is up, we've bought over half our presents, and the lights are up also. The picture I just put on the BenCam has specks from the flash reflecting off the snow. Kinda neat.
In other news, my brother and his family look like they're having a blast getting ready for Christmas.

Oregon Trip!
Last weekend, we went to a place where there's no sales tax and someone always pumps your gas for you. No, it's not some kind of fantasy world -- it's Oregon. Another weekend, another out-of-state trip.
We left on Friday morning and flew to Portland, Oregon, to visit Jenelle's family in Beaverton. After lunch at Red Robin, we relaxed at Dave and Pam's house. While Jenelle and Pam went grocery shopping, I took a nap. :) We took it easy for the rest of the night.
On Saturday, we had a big dinner with lots of family coming over. Brian, Erica, Jeff, Josie, Lucas, Grandma & Grandpa Walter, and Grandma Comeau joined the four of us for a great meal. It was nice to see everyone again.
On Sunday, I ran 15 miles in the morning, including a jaunt up the steepest hill I've ever run (14% grade). Don't worry, Mom, I took it slow. :)
After the run, we went shopping at Washington Square mall. We took advantage of the lack of sales tax in Portland. I also stopped at the movie theater for some kettle corn, which is quickly becoming a regular feature of all my Oregon trips. For dinner, we joined Jeff and Lucas at the Spaghetti Factory.
As much as we wanted to stay longer, we flew back on Monday morning. Thanks to Dave and Pam for all of their hospitality!
Enjoy photos from Sunday. Sorry, I didn't think of taking any pictures before that.

We didn't take a lot of pictures, but eight photos from Grand Rapids are now available.
Jenelle got some great video footage, so I'm putting that together now.

Twin Cities Marathon Pictures / Video
With a lot of family in town for my cousin Dyan's wedding, it's been another exciting weekend. While I'm still processing all the fun we've had, enjoy pictures from the Twin Cities Marathon.
I also uploaded a video, which is available on the movies page. It's a big one (over 26 megabytes) -- I guess I should learn how to use Google Video.
Anyway -- thanks again to Andrew, Holly, Aunt Gail, Mom & Dad, Mary & Dave, Dan & Donna, and everyone who supported me during the race!

New Movie!
On the Fox 6 weather report tonight, the "feature photo" was submitted by Grandpa Milt. I transferred it to DV from our HD converter, so there's gray bars on the top and bottom of the video, but hopefully you can experience it well enough by watching this.

Site Content Plus
In an effort to revitalize the web site, I've modified some of the things in the right-hand column.
1) I've added a weather sticker below the BenCam graphic. Wow, it's warm today!
2) The "Birthdays & Anniversaries" section shows all birthdays and anniversaries occurring within the last week or the next two weeks. Well, all the ones I have in my database, anyway. Let me know if yours is missing.
3) The "Family History" section is connected directly to my famous This Day in Isaacson Family History site. Click on one of the links to browse today's entries or all of the entries for the current month.
The neat thing about each of these new items is that they automatically update themselves each day. So, even if I go weeks without making a blog entry, the site is still changing on a daily basis.
Family members: Allow me to make one more plug for the history site. There's 80 events right now, with room for plenty more. You can add your own events to the site using this handy form. Add whatever you like, even if you're a somewhat distant relative. :)

Madison Marathon Movie Added
Check out the movies page for a short video of my run in Madison in May. There's several photos and one video clip. Jenelle did a pretty good job capturing media, especially considering that I signed up for this race the day before. :)
Update: I also uploaded a movie from the Waukesha Trailbreaker Marathon, which was on March 31.

Summer Fun/Craziness Continued
First of all, last weekend was a blast! Here are pictures from our second trip up north this month. Our first trip was with friends, and this one was with family. We had lots of fun playing mini-golf, sitting by the campfire, and doing much more in Wisconsin's beautiful north woods.
It was especially great to see Andrew, Holly, Ella, and Lily, who made the drive from Minnesota. We had so much fun that we almost decided to visit them this weekend as well. However, we quickly became busy with something else.
We've been getting a fair amount of rain lately. We discovered on Wednesday night that our sump pump failed, and we got about an inch of water throughout our basement. Now, this isn't really that much, but when you have cardboard boxes on the floor, the water seeps up into them and can seriously damage the contents. Thankfully, we were able to save everything important to us. We threw out a lot of old stuff. Some of it was a bit expensive when we bought it, but since we hadn't used it in years, it's not the worst thing in the world to get rid of it.
A huge thank-you to my dad, who always has a backup sump pump ready. He was over in about 30 minutes to install the new one. A big thank-you also goes out to our small group friends, who spontaneously agreed to cancel the evening's Bible study and head over to our place to help us clean up. We got a lot of soaked boxes out to the curb, and we had a waste removal service come by on Thursday to pick it up. We've also arranged with the city's Public Works department to have them pick up more than the standard complement of trash tomorrow.
We spent most of the weekend organizing all of our stuff. We also managed to clean up the garage while we were at it. Below are a few pictures, which include:
1) Our newly organized basement storage area
2) The trash we've set out for pickup tomorrow
3) The brand new accent chair that was delivered on Friday afternoon (we love it!)
I've had enough drama for a while. I hope everything is nice and routine as we head into Labor Day weekend! :)

Goodbye, Alero
Our vacation up north was wonderful. We went fishing, played mini-golf, learned card games, ate homemade breakfasts, rode on bike trails, and did a whole lot more, all while taking time out to relax. I think Jenelle, Jamie, Janet, Mark, and Heather all had a great time. However, there was one little thing that happened that put a damper on things.
On Saturday evening, we were headed back from dinner at Monical's Pizza, which was only half a mile away from our cabin. I stopped the Alero in the leftmost northbound lane of highway 51, my turn signal clicking away as I waited for oncoming traffic to clear. At about 5:15 p.m., I heard screeching tires followed by a loud and jolting SLAM.
A drunk driver rear-ended us. We estimate he skidded into us at about 35 miles per hour.
Accident Photos
The great news is that none of the four people in my car were injured. We were able to get the car off the road and call the police. The other driver did not appear to be hurt, but he was definitely impaired. His car's air bag had deployed and wouldn't start. A bystander in a yellow shirt waved traffic around his vehicle so that no one inadvertently crashed into him.
After what seemed like forever, the police came and processed the scene. The drunk driver was taken into custody on a stretcher -- more on him later.
As you can see from the photos, there were two bicycles on the back of our car at the time. After a visit to the bike shop on Sunday and the body shop on Monday, we learned that:
1) The bikes could be repaired, suprisingly, for less than their cost.
2) The Alero, though it could be driven to the body shop, was totaled because of damage to the rear of the vehicle and the exhaust system.
Another great lesson from all of this -- when waiting to turn left, DO NOT TURN YOUR WHEELS until traffic has cleared. If you do this, you will be pushed into oncoming traffic if you are rear-ended, which could make a bad accident even worse.
Back to the drunk driver -- as it turns out, this guy is wanted in Michigan for allegedly burning down his estranged wife's home while his wife was away. This article and this one have some more information. Jenelle and I find it surprising that the articles do not mention how the Vilas County authorities were able to arrest the suspect. Basically, we got in his way!
So, no more Alero for us. Jenelle and I will miss it, but not too much. We've already replaced the vehicle, and we're both doing just fine.

Summer party funtimes
We've been up to plenty of things in the past month. Nothing quite compares to our trip to Hawaii, but we're keeping busy and having fun.
For example, we celebrated our birthdays (Jenelle on June 21, me on June 26) with dinner at our favorite places. Jenelle picked Red Robin on her birthday, and I picked Tenuta's on mine.
With the arrival of our new deck furniture, we revived our annual July 3 party (after skipping it last year). My brother and his family were in town for the holiday, and it was great to spend time with him, Holly, Ella, and Lily. I was busy during the party, so I didn't take a whole lot of pictures, but here's a good one that features some of our new furniture:

After the 3rd, we took some vacation days and spent an extended weekend in Oregon to visit Jenelle's family. We celebrated the recent wedding of her oldest brother. Congrats and best wishes to Brian and Erica!

Besides that, we're putting in our share of time at work, and we're doing okay. I'm sure they'll be more summer fun in the weeks ahead!

Year in Review
We've been living in our new house for about a year now! We've finished several projects, and more are in progress. Here's a summary:
Outside
The lawn was a mess when me moved in -- lots of clover and other weeds. We've now taken care of that, and we're proceeding to patch some of the bare areas in the weeks to come. There's still a pile of dirt in the corner of our back yard from the post holes for the fence and deck, but we think we've found another home for it.
Jenelle has bought a few flowers and some other plants, so the landscaping continues to improve. There's also a tiny pine tree that I got in Oregon last October. It almost didn't survive the winter, but it appears to be doing okay.
The deck is wonderful, and we plan to have several gatherings on it this summer. The fence is also great, and we had it stained the same shade as the deck.
The Basement
We began cleaning efforts in the basement a few weeks ago -- we need to spend some more time down there one of these days. We'll probably get it finished sometime in the next few years.
Downstairs
We've painted the family room and dining room, and Jenelle recently painted the kitchen a lovely green color called "Scottish Isle". We got a new couch, "big chair", and ottoman in the family room several months ago, and we're on the lookout for an accent chair to add a bit more color to the room. We still love the big screen TV that Dad helped us install.
We haven't done much to the garage, but we have lots of ideas, including insulation, a utility sink, and a major cleaning.
Upstairs
The Bonus Room doubles as an exercise room and a guest room. We had Jenelle's parents stay there on a couple of occasions.
The second bedroom is sometimes called "Ben's Room", because it has all of my running stuff, all of my music stuff, and the filing cabinet.
The third bedroom has my old college futon frame in it with a new mattress. We used to keep our laundry in there until we figured out how to keep in all in the master bedroom closet.
There's plenty of space in the master bedroom for the nice furniture we bought back when we lived in the condo. We haven't painted in there, and there's one settling crack in the wall above the door (not really a big deal). So, I suppose we could do some more in there.
The bathrooms are great -- Jenelle installed inexpensive but efficient shower heads in both of them. They also seem to have more pressure than the old shower heads.
So, lots of accomplishments, but plenty of work still to be done. Have a great Memorial Day weekend!

The Great Outdoors
It's finally warming up in Wisconsin, and Jenelle and I are taking advantage as best we can.
Last Saturday, I started up the mower and cut the lawn for the first time this year. Jenelle was close behind with the edger. We also tried out the blower that we got for Christmas from Andrew & Holly to clean up some of the grass clippings. It works very well.
On Sunday, we had friends over for a spontaneous barbecue. This is the first "official" party we've had on the deck since the one we had shortly after it was completed last September. We had plenty of food, and the grill worked perfectly in the corner of our deck.

It got chilly again this week, but the weather improved just in time for this weekend! I'll write more about the fun activities from this weekend in a future post, and I will provide an explanation for the award currently on the BenCam. :)

Basement Cleaning
Yesterday, Jenelle and I began the task of organizing our basement. We have hundreds of boxes down there, along with a few storage bins and an ample supply of Ziploc Big Bags. With the task of organizing, there comes a time to "let go" of some of those old souvenirs that aren't really doing much more than taking up space. For example, it's finally time to recycle the seven-ounce empty bottle of Miller Lite that I enjoyed on my 21st birthday. Yeah, eight years is long enough.
For those of you have trouble getting rid of old things, I took a picture of me with it, and it's up on the BenCam. The memory will last forever. :)

Trailbreaker Photos
This morning, I ran another marathon in Waukesha, WI. Mom, Dad, and Jenelle came to cheer me on, and they got a few photos, and they're already up on the photos page. It was a pretty fun race which included a climb to the top of a 40-foot tower near the midpoint of the course.
And by the way, Happy Anniversary to us! We celebrated our fourth wedding anniversary on Thursday.

My dad and I went to Little Rock last weekend, where I ran in yet another marathon. Here's some photos. We didn't get a lot of photos from the actual race, but my dad did get some video footage. I'll be putting together a video soon.

Yeah, we're still doing fine
Even though last Saturday night's blizzard canceled church services the following morning, it wasn't really that bad. I probably could have driven somewhere but I decided to take it easy. Jenelle was in Tucson for a company function, so I took the opportunity to finish watching all three movies in the Lord of the Rings Trilogy. My strategy was very simple; watch some of the movie, do some laundry, shovel some snow, watch more of the movie, finish the laundry, eat something, shovel more snow... you get the idea. The snow was wet and heavy, so I had to take care of it in shifts. :)
Perhaps someday soon, I'll have something more exciting to write about. For now, here's more birthdays:
Sunday, February 11: Happy Birthday, Tony!
Friday, February 23: Happy Birthday, Uncle Mike!
Wednesday, February 28: Happy Birthday, Dyan!

No shadow!
Well, Punxsutawney Phil predicts an early spring. However, it's not going to be that early. It's no surprise that wind chills are below zero in Wisconsin this time of year, but we'd prefer that the temperatures were at least in the teens. We'll get no such luck this weekend. It's so cold that I'm not even planning on running outside (and I have lots of funny-looking clothes that I can wear to stay warm while running).
Things haven't been all that exciting for us lately. We're both keeping busy at work, but we did manage to get our taxes done last weekend. We owed a tiny bit to the federal government, but the state government is giving us more than 100 times that amount, so we'll be okay. :)
Let's celebrate January birthdays and anniversaries!
